Meet Morgan, Health Policy Consultant

Morgan Craven is all about leading with radical empathy and kindness. From battling rejection and self consciousness in her field to breaking through (and now thriving!) as a health policy consultant, to approaching a new life during COVID by following the wise words of Grey’s Anatomy, Morgan believes that taking action with compassion is the true warrior way.

Read up on how Morgan found confidence in her workplace, her sure-fire way to relax with “the girls”, and her big obsession - voting.

What people call you: Morgan

Where you live: New York City + Austin, TX

What you do: Health Policy Consultant

How would you describe your style?

Functional + Effeminate

Who are your icons? What is it about them that inspires you?

Ruth Bader Ginsburg + Cecile Richards. Unequivocally, these women have dedicated their professional (and much of their personal) lives to winning new levels of gender parity in our justice, political, and healthcare systems. We always think of these iconic, galvanizing figures' paths as being out of reach---but I think it's incredible to look at their stories and see that they also faced what must have felt like insurmountable obstacles, and then went on to change the world (quite literally).

When do you feel most confident?

My workplace. Interestingly, this former place of weakness has become my place of strength. Finding a job in my field was really difficult---I applied to 50+ jobs and got a SINGLE interview---which played into the voices in my head saying "this is a fluke, you don't deserve to be here." And then, when the job started, the learning curve was steep... there was a lot of tripping up and (I'll admit it) crying. It took about 10 months of hard work and, finally, things clicked---I woke up and was like "I am really fucking good at this and deserve a seat at the table."

What’s your daily routine?

Along with COVID-19 came chaos, so all the rules have been thrown out the window! It's been a blur of Zoom meetings, cross-country moving, and poorly executed at-home workout videos. Normally, I'd wake up around 6:30AM, go to Pilates, head into the office for most of the day, and spend time with my partner before lights out. I am (overly) passionate about my work, so getting to spend all day improving healthcare is an absolute dream.

How do you relax and unwind?

I want to be the person who says "cuddling up with a book and a nice cup of tea" -- but, god, what a lie that would be! My happy place is watching Sex and the City while binging New York Times wedding announcements with a GIANT bowl of fettuccine Alfredo on my lap. Add double stuff Oreos, as necessary.

What keeps you going?

My friends and family. An unexpected result of COVID-19 was identifying and removing the noise in my life---everything from old clothing to people. I feel more centered and focused on who and what are important.

Something you’re obsessed with right now:

VOTING. Fucking register to vote and then do it. Including local and state elections.

Words to live by:

Hold on tight, folks, I'm quoting Grey's Anatomy... "So, do it. Decide. Is this the life you want to live? Is this the person you want to love? Is this the best you can be? Can you be stronger? Kinder? More compassionate? Decide. Breathe in, breathe out, and decide."

What’s your hype up song or anthem:

Freedom by Kygo.

What does Warrior mean to you?

I think being a Warrior is more about radical kindness and empathy, and less about force or strength. No matter your skills or interests, there are ways you can engage and take action to respond to injustices and improve the lives of those around you.
